One source says he was murdered in Carthage, Tunis, returning from an embassy to Constantinople. Records do not validate this. Saint Arnulf (Arnoul) of Metz (c. 582–641 AD) is remembered as a bishop, courtier to the Merovingians, and an ancestor of the Carolingian dynasty.According to the oldest sources, he wasn’t murdered. Here’s what we know:Arnulf served as bishop of Metz from 613 AD until his retirement around 629 AD.After withdrawing to a hermitage at Remiremont (Vosges), he lived a semi-eremitic life for about 10–12 years. He died peacefully around 641 AD at Remiremont (some chronicles give 640 AD). His body was later translated to Metz and became the focus of a cult.No contemporary or near-contemporary text accuses anyone of killing him. Later hagiographies emphasize miracles at his death and during the translation of his relics, but none report an assassination or murder.Where confusion can arise:Several other 7th-century bishops and nobles were assassinated in Merovingian power struggl
