Involvement with Queen Isabella of France While in exile in France, Roger Mortimer met Queen Isabella, who was estranged from her husband, Edward II. Both were already married — Mortimer to Joan de Geneville and Isabella to Edward — but their shared political goals and personal attraction led to a public alliance that became an intimate relationship. Chroniclers of the period widely accused them of being lovers, a scandal that shocked both the English and French courts. Their partnership was central to the success of the 1326 invasion, as Isabella used her royal position and French support, while Mortimer provided military leadership. Although some genealogical traditions suggest that Isabella may have borne Mortimer an illegitimate child during this period, no definitive historical record confirms the child’s identity. Their relationship ended with Mortimer’s execution in 1330, after which Isabella lived in relative seclusion.

    • Life History of Roger Mortimer, 1st Earl of March:
Roger Mortimer was born in 1287 into a powerful family with strong influence along the Welsh border. He inherited substantial estates and titles through his grandfather and father, becoming one of the most prominent nobles of his generation. Mortimer rose to military prominence during the reign of King Edward II, serving in campaigns in Ireland and against the Scots. Initially loyal to the king, Mortimer became disillusioned with Edward’s governance and the dominance of royal favorites, particularly Hugh Despenser the Younger. His opposition led to his arrest and imprisonment in the Tower of London in 1322. In 1323, he escaped to France, where he entered exile and began plotting Edward’s overthrow.

In 1326, Mortimer returned to England with Queen Isabella of France at the head of an invasion force. Their campaign quickly succeeded, forcing Edward II to abdicate in favor of his son, Edward III. During Edward III’s minority, Mortimer effectively ruled England alongside Isabella, accumulating power and wealth. His dominance earned him many enemies, and in 1330 the young king seized power, had Mortimer arrested, and executed him for treason.

While in exile in France, Roger Mortimer met Queen Isabella, who was estranged from her husband, Edward II.
