1063 Hyde Family in Scotland

HYDE FAMILY CONNECTIONS IN SCOTLAND

In the spring of 2010, Jamie Hyde (son of Eric Hyde; grandson of Walter Court Hyde) sent me some intriguing information about a possible connection to the Hyde family in Scotland. The story began with a man called John Hyde Christie (1836-1926) who was well known in Scotland as the General Manager of a company called The United Turkey Red Co. Ltd. In his time, it was the largest firm engaged in the business of bleaching, finishing, dyeing, and printing in Scotland.

John Hyde Christie was a son of William Henry McLean Christie and his wife, Helen Hyde (born ~1810). J.H. Christie was married to Jessie Fulton (1842- ) and they had five children: Henry William Christie (1874- ), Jane Christie (1875- ), John Fulton Christie (1878- ), George James Hyde Christie (1879- ) and Helen Hyde Christie (II) (1883- ). Although no records have been found to connect Helen Hyde to James Hyde’s family, Jamie noted that his father (Eric J.W. Hyde) and grandfather (Walter Court Hyde) had visited George J. H. Christie’s home, “Ross Priory” in Dunbartonshire, Scotland, during the Second World War (George was a decorated First World War veteran – he had been awarded the D.S.O.). Jamie also has a 1960 Christmas card from “George & Jane” with the Ross Priory address on it. Eric Hyde recalled his visit to Ross Priory and confirmed that there was a family connection to the Christies, but he did not know the details.

So, we are left with the understanding that there is a connection between the Christie and Hyde families, but the question of course is what exactly is the connection? We can only speculate that Helen could have been a sister of James Hyde. She was born in Glasgow in 1810, which is close to James’ birth in 1814.

Some further investigation revealed that according to the 1861 Scotland census, a woman called Rachel Hyde was living with the family of Helen (Hyde) Christie, in Glasgow. At that time she was 74 years old, and was identified as “Grandmother”. In 1861, Helen would have been 51 years oldd if the speculation above were correct, then Rachel would be James’ mother.

Further research indicated that Rachel had been born in Ireland, and had been married to Richard Hyde on the 7th June 1807 in Barony, Renfrewshire, Scotland (interestingly, it appears that Rachel’s maiden name was also Hyde).

Now, if Rachel was James’ mother, then this information about her husband Richard conflicts with some information that Aunt Isobel left us with: Isobel mentioned in her interview with Laurie that James’ father was Robert Hyde… Was Isobel mistaken? That would seem unlikely because she had a remarkable memory for facts. Nevertheless, it does seem significant to me that James named his first son Richard: As Isobel said herself, it was customary at that time to name sons and daughters after their parents and grandparents. James did not give the name Robert to any of his own children – – nor did Helen (John gave the name Robert to his second son, and James’ eldest son, Richard, named his youngest son Robert John Manly). James and Helen both gave the name Helen to one of their own daughters, and Helen and John each gave the name Rachel to one of their own daughters.

Further research into the Hyde & Christie families in Scotland has turned up a few other bits of interesting information that are worth noting:

We begin with this reference – http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/2971157 – which relates to Christie Park, and includes this reference to J.H. Christie’s obituary: “John Hyde Christie was first employed by his cousin’s firm, Hay & Hyde at Port Dundas“.
According to the Glasgow Post Office Directory 1853-54, ‘Hay & Hyde’ was a firm of ‘Silk Throwsters and Patent Silk Spinners, Sawmillfield, Port Dundas’. The same directory also has a listing for “John Hyde of Hay & Hyde, 275 St. Georges Road”. In 1853-54, John Hyde Christie would have been about 18, and likely at his first job. This indicates to me that John Hyde (of Hay & Hyde) is very likely the “cousin” referred to above, and he must have been related via J.H. Christie’s mother, Helen Hyde. (At this point it is also worth taking note of another fact in the Post Office Directory: a “Mrs. Hyde, Grocer”, was living and/or working next door, at 277 St. Georges Road. In the 1861 Scotland census, Rachel Hyde was described as “Retired Grocer”).
According to the 1851 Scotland Census, Massachusetts ry Hyde, 33 years old, lived at 275 St. Georges Road (John Hyde’s location in the 1853 GPO directory, above) with her children Mary (aged 11), Robert (8), Rachel (6) and John (3). She is listed as “Wife”. There is no mention of John Hyde, but Mary is not listed as a widow (It could well be that Census-takers only recorded who was home when they called, to prevent double-counting).
According to the 1861 Scotland Census (ten years later), John Hyde, 53 years old and Mary Hyde 43 years old, live at 29 Scotia Street with their children Mary W. (aged 21), James (aged 30 – a typo, I’m sure this should have been 20), Robert M. (18), Rachel N. (16), Melville (9), William W. (7) and John G.B. (2). John’s occupation is listed as “Silk Garn Agent”. Mary’s birthplace is listed as “Cupar, fifeshire” in both 1851 & 1861 censuses. Other info is consistent as well, including the names and ages of children Mary, Robert and Rachel (maybe young John died between 1851 and 1861). I can’t explain why the son James was not listed in the 1851 Census (he would have been 10), but the rest of the info is very consistent, though.
Now I am going to try to relate some of what I know about these various family members in the years that followed, and how certain information seems to connect with what we know about the family of James Hyde & Agnes Clark:
In the 1861 Scotland Census (as above), James Hyde (aged 20) and his brother Robert M. (18), were both described as Post Office Clerks. They are the sons of John and Mary Hyde, and are still living at home in Glasgow.
In the 1871 England census, James W. Hyde (aged 30) and Robert M. Hyde (aged 28), who were both born in Paisley, Scotland, are lodgers at an address in London, and are described as clerks at the General Post Office in London.
In the 1881 Scotland census, James Hyde (aged 41), born in Paisley, Scotttland, is described as a Superintendent at the Edinburgh Post Office.
The same information is consistent in the 1891 and 1901 Scotland censuses. In the 1901 census, James W. Hyde is described as the Controller of the Edinburgh Post Office.
The Controller of the Edinburgh post office, at that time, was James Wilson Hyde: I know this for several reasons, including the fact that he was the author of several books about the history of the Royal Mail, including: “The Royal Mail, it’s Curiosities & Romance” and “A Hundred Yettars by Post“.
So, what is the significance of all this??!! It is this: All of this demonstrates that James Wilson Hyde is almost certainly the son of John Hyde and his wife Mary. He was their eldest son, and I am convinced that he got the name Wilson because it was his mother’s maiden name.
And now, we finally come to the point of all this: I have wondered about the significance of names that James Hyde & Agnes Clark gave to their children: Jean Mackenzie and Helen Rennie for example. While we know that people routinely named their children after close relatives, I still don’t know where the names ‘Mackenzie’ and ‘Rennie’ originated from. Butamed their second daughter Mary Wilson Hyde (1846-1851). I think it is reasonable to conclude that she was named after John Hyde’s wife*.
Even though this is a strong indicator of a connection between the families of John Hyde, Helen Hyde, and our James, none of it demonstrates definitively what the connection is. Until the right documentation is discovered, the relationships remain to be determined.

* I have a correspondent in Scotland (who I connected with through Ancestry.ca) whose Great grandmother, Massachusetts ry Wilson, was married to a John Hyde in Glasgow. Her understanding of their family (children, names, dates etc.) is very consistent with mine. Still, though, there is no documentary evidence to connect them directly to our James Hyde.

What follows is a list of ancestors of Richard and Rachel Hyde – – whose children may have included our James:

Instead of remarrying, King Robert and David annulled the betrothal contract and David became betrothed to Mary Douglas instead.

Eastwell in Kent is recorded as "Estwelle" in the Domesday Book of 1086, and as "Eastwelle" in the 1267 "Inquisitiones post mortem", and Eastwell in Leicestershire is recorded as "Esteuuella" in the Domesday Book and as "Estwell" in the 1166 Pipe Rolls. Both placenames share the same meaning and derivation, which is from the Olde English pre 7th Century "east", east, with "well(a)", well, spring or stream; hence "Eastern spring or stream". During the Middle Ages when migration for the purpose of job-seeking was becoming more common, people often took their former village name as a means of identification, thus resulting in a wide dispersal of the name. The surname was first recorded in the laer half of the 13th Century (see below). Recordings of the surname from English Church Registers include: the christening of Agnes, daughter of Willmi Eastwell, on October 18th 1551, at Chislet, Kent; the christening of Robert, son of William Eastwell, on April 13th 1657, at St. Nicholas, Leicestershire; the marriage of Alice Eastwell and George Hayes on September 29th 1657, at Swavesey, Cambridgeshire; and the marriage of Caleb Eastwell and Martha Sanders, on October 8th 1710, at Swaffham Prior, Cambridgeshire. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of Richard de Estvelde, which was dated 1273, in the "Hundred Rolls of Kent", during the reign of King Edward 1, known as "The Hammer of the Scots", 1272 - 1307. Surnames became necessary when governments introduced personal taxation. In England this was known as Poll Tax. Throughout the centuries, surnames in every country have continued to "develop" often leading to astonishing variants of the original spelling. 1106 Jane was the great-granddaughter of Henry VII through his younger daughter Mary, and was a first cousin once removed of Edward VI. She had an excellent humanist education and a reputation as one of the most learned young women of her day.[6] In May 1553, she married Lord Guildford Dudley, a younger son of Edward's chief minister John Dudley, Duke of Northumberland. In June 1553, Edward VI wrote his will, nominating Jane and her male heirs as successors to the Crown, in part because his half-sister Mary was Roman Catholic, while Jane was a committed Protestant and would support the reformed Church of England, whose foundation Edward claimed to have laid. The will removed his half-sisters, Massachusetts ry and Elizabeth, from the line of succession on account of their illegitimacy, subverting their claims under the Third Succession Act.
After Edward's death, Jane was proclaimed queen on 10 July 1553 and awaited coronation in the Tower of London. Support for Mary grew very quickly, and most of Jane's supporters abandoned her. The Privy Council of England suddenly changed sides and proclaimed Mary as queen on 19 July 1553, deposing Jane. Her primary supporter, her father-in-law the Duke of Northumberland, was accused of treason and executed less than a month later. Jane was held prisoner in the Tower and was convicted in November 1553 of high treason, which carried a sentence of death—though Mary initially spared her life. However, Jane soon became viewed as a threat to the Crown when her father, Henry Grey, 1st Duke of Suffolk, got involved with Wyatt's rebellion against Queen Mary's intention to marry Philip II of Spain. Both Jane and her husband were executed on 12 February 1554.

1114 John de Lacy (c. 1192 – 22 July 1240) was the 2nd Earl of Lincoln, of the fourth creation. He was also the, 7th Baron of Pontefract, 8th Baron of Halton, 8th Lord of Bowland.

Background
He was the eldest son and heir of Roger de Lacy and his wife, Maud or Matilda de Clere (not of the de Clare family).

Public life
He was hereditary constable of Chester and, in the 15th year of King John, undertook the payment of 7,000 marks to the crown, in the space of four years, for livery of the lands of his inheritance, and to be discharged of all his father's debts due to the exchequer, further obligating himself by oath, that in case he should ever swerve from his allegiance, and adhere to the king's enemies, all of his possessions should devolve upon the crown, promising also, that he would not marry without the king's licence. By this agreement it was arranged that the king should retain the castles of Pontefract and Dunnington, still in his own hands; and that he, the said John, should allow 40 pounds per year, for the custody of those fortresses. But the next year he had Dunnington restored to him, upon hostages.

John de Lacy, 8th Baron of Halton Castle, 5th Lord of Bowland and hereditary constable of Chester, was one of the earliest who took up arms at the time of the Magna Charta, and was appointed to see that the new statutes were properly carried into effect and observed in the counties of York and Nottingham. He was one of twenty-five barons charged with overseeing the observance of Magna Carta in 1215.

He was excommunicated by the Pope. Upon the accession of King Henry III, he joined a party of noblemen and made a pilgrimage to the Holy Land, and did good service at the siege of Damietta. In 1232 he was made Earl of Lincoln and in 1240, governor of Chester and Beeston Castles. In 1237, his lordship was one of those appointed to prohibit Oto, the pope's prelate, from establishing anything derogatory to the king's crown and dignity, in the council of prelates then assembled; and the same year he was appointed High Sheriff of Cheshire, being likewise constituted Governor of the castle of Chester.

Private life
He married firstly Alice in 1214 in Pontefract, daughter of Gilbert, lord of L'Aigle, who gave him one daughter,
1. Joan.
Alice died in 1216 in Pontefract.

He married secondly in 1221 Margaret de Quincy, only daughter and heiress of Robert de Quincy, son of Saer de Quincy, 1st Earl of Winchester, by Hawyse, 4th sister and co-heir of Ranulph de Mechines, Earl of Chester and Lincoln, which Ranulph, by a formal charter under his seal, granted the Earldom of Lincoln, that is, so much as he could grant thereof, to the said Hawyse, "to the end that she might be countess, and that her heirs might also enjoy the earldom;" which grant was confirmed by the king, and at the especial request of the countess, this John de Lacy, constable of Chester, through his marriage was allowed to succeed de Blondeville and was created by charter, dated Northampton, 23 November 1232, Earl of Lincoln, with remainder to the heirs of his body, by his wife, the above-mentioned Margaret. In the contest which occurred during the same year, between the king and Richard Marshal, 3rd Earl of Pembroke, Earl Marshal, Matthew Paris states that the Earl of Lincoln was brought over to the king's party, with John of Scotland, 7th Earl of Chester, by Peter de Rupibus, Bishop of Winchester, for a bribe of 1,000 marks.

By this marriage he had one son,
1. Edmund de Lacy, Baron of Pontefract, and two daughters, of one,
2. Maud, married Richard de Clare, 6th Earl of Gloucester.
[3. unnamed daughter]

Later life
He died on 22 July 1240 and was buried at the Cisterian Abbey of Stanlow, in County Chester. The monk Matthew Paris, records: "On the 22nd day of July, in the year 1240, which was St. Magdalen's Day, John, Earl of Lincoln, after suffering from a long illness went the way of all flesh".
Margaret, his wife, survived him and remarried Walter Marshal, 5th Earl of Pembroke.

“Royal Ancestry: A Study in Colonial & Medieval Families,” Douglas Richardson (2013):
“JOHN DE LACY (or LASCY) (also known as JOHN OF CHESTER), Knt., of Pontefract, Yorkshire, Naseby, Northamptonshire, Hatton, Cheshire, etc., hereditary Constable of Chester, Keeper of Duninton Castle, 1214, Constable of Whitchurch Castle, 1233, Privy Councillor, 1237, Sheriff of Cheshire, 1237, Constable of Chester and Beeston Castles, 1237, son and heir, born about 1192 (of age in 1213). He married (1st) ALICE DE L'AIGLE, daughter of Gilbert de l'Aigle, of Pevensey, Sussex, by Isabel de Warenne, daughter of Hamelin, 5th Earl of Surrey (illegitimate son of Geoffrey Plantagenet, (Count of Anjou) [see WARENNE 7.iv for her ancestry]. . (This is incorrect, they had 1 daughter, Joan) She was buried at Norton Priory, Cheshire. He obtained livery of his inheritance in July 1213. In 1213-14 he was with the king in Poitou. He was one of the few English barons to take the Cross for the Crusades along with the king 4 March 1214. In 1215 he joined the confederacy of the barons against the king. He was one of the twenty-five barons elected to guarantee the observance of Magna Carta, signed by King John 15 June 1215. In consequence he was among the barons excommunicated by Pope Innocent III 16 Dec. 1215. At the end of the year he made peace with the king, but next summer was again in rebellion, and King John destroyed his castle of Donington. In August 1217 he was pardoned by King Henry III, and in Nov. 1217 he was commissioned to conduct the King of Scots to him. In 1218 he accompanied Ranulph, Earl of Chester, on crusade, and fought at the Siege of Damietta. He returned to England about August 1220, and in Feb. 1220/1 took part in the reduction of Skipton Castle. He married (2nd) in 1221, before 21 June MARGARET (or MARGERY) DE QUINCY, daughter and heiress of Robert de Quincy, by Hawise, suo jure Countess of Lincoln, daughter of Hugh, Earl of Chester [see QUINCY 6.i for her ancestry]. She was born before 1217. They had one son, Edmund, Knt. [Constable of Chester], and three daughters, including Maud and Margaret. In 1223 he held the prescriptive right to a weekly market held at the manor of Snaith, Yorkshire. In 1226 he acted as itinerant judge in Lincolnshire and Lancashire, and, in the former county in 1233. In 1227 he was sent on an embassy to Antwerp. He presented to the churches of Naseby, Northamptonshire in 1227 and 1231, and Wadenhoe, Rutland, 1237, and two portions of the church of Clipstone, Northamptonshire in 1228, 1229, 1230, and 1235. In 1229 he was appointed to conduct Alexander II, King of Scots to England to meet King Henry III of England at York. From about 1230 he was about the court, and in that year was a commissioner to treat for a truce with France. In 1230 John and Margaret released their claim to the main Quincy estates to her uncle, Roger de Quincy; Roger in return granted them and their issue her mother's dower, including the manor of Grantchester, Cambridgeshire, to hold of Roger and his heirs. In 1231 he was in Wales on the king's service. Sometime before 1232, he exchanged one acre of land in the vill of Kingston with Christchurch Priory, Hampshire, in return for an acre of the priory's land also in Kingston. In 1232 he took a prominent part as the king's commissioner in the proceedings against Hubert de Burgh, Earl of Kent. On 22 Nov. 1232, at the instance of Margaret's mother, Hawise de Quincy, the king granted John the £20 per annum which Ranulph, late Earl of Chester and Lincoln, had received for the 3rd penny of the county as Earl of Lincoln, and which the Earl had in his lifetime granted to Hawise his sister: to hold in nomine comitis Lincolnie to the said John and his heirs by Margaret his wife, whereby he became Earl of Lincoln. In 1233 he was one of Hubert de Burgh's keepers at Devizes Castle until he should become a Templar. The same year he joined the party against Peter des Roches, Bishop of Winchester, but the Bishop gained him over, and from that time he acted with the Court, becoming one of the king's unpopular councillors. He was a justice in Lincolnshire in 1234. In 1236 he carried one of the State swords at the Coronation of Queen Eleanor. The same year a dispute occured between John, Earl of Lincoln, and Margaret his wife and the Prior of Wimborne, the former alleging that a new market had been raised in Wimborne Minster, Dorset, to the detriment of their existing market in the town. In 1237 he was a plenipotentiary to make peace with Scotland. SIR JOHN DE LACY, Earl of Lincoln, Constable of Chester, died 22 July 1240, and was buried near his father in the monk's choir at Stanlaw Abbey, his body being removed later to Whalley Abbey.

1164 Last name: GilesThis interesting surname is of Pre Christian, Ancient Greek origin. It is a short form of "Aegidius", meaning "a wearer of the goatskin", a refernce to a holy man, or somebody who did good works. St. Giles (originally Aegidius) left Greece to become a hermit in France, and was only discovered when the hind from whose milk he lived, was pursued to his hermitage by a royal hunting party. It is said that his Greek name was turned into Gidie, then to Gide, and finally became Gilles, the usual French form. St. Giles is regarded as the patron of beggars and cripples; hence the London church of St. Giles Cripplegate. The name was introduced into England and Scotland by the Normans, with the names Gilo and Ghilo appearing in the Domesday Book of 1086. In the modern idiom the surname has many spellings, and is found in almost every European country. These spellings range from Giles, Gyles and Jiles to Agidi, Gillee, Ilchman, and Gillyns! One of the first selers in the New World of the American Colonies was Jonathon Giles, who appears in the very first muster for Virginia, United States. He is shown as "living on February 16th 1623". If he had not been, he would have been shown in the "dead" listings. The first recorded spelling of the family name is believed to be that of Ailward Gile, which was dated 1176, in the pipe rolls of the county of Buckinghamshire, England, during the reign of King Henry 11, known as "The Builder of Churches", 1154 - 1189. Throughout the centuries, surnames in every country have continued to "develop" often leading to astonishing variants of the original spelling.

After receiving the Marriage Certificate of James Edward Giles the 2nd I found that his father and mother were recorded as James Edward Giles, ClergymanThat James II listed on his wedding day that he was born in Gloustershire EnglandThat he had been previously married and widowed in October 1892That Eva had no known Mother or FatherThat she was a spinster
Research into the location of James in NZ uncovered him in residents as a farmer with Eva in Weymouth !!!

To think that James came from England, Massachusetts rried in Auckland, farmed in Weymouth which must have been the back and beyond in those days (1914) and then in 1960 Stan Giles moved from Wairou worked in Otahuhu and decided of all places to build a house WEYMOUTH

I note it was a reverant Beecroft who married James and Eva and distinctly remember Mr Beecroft having a farm about 100 meters from our home when I was a child

I have James aged 49 in 1901 leaving Pago, Samoa to San Francisco

He had a James Giles aged 24 Female marked as wife This makes her Eva Lena

and a JE Giles aged 2 male, Massachusetts rked as children, Who is the mother as he married Eva in 1900, or did he have JE in 1899 them marry Eva 1900 as Ana had already died

and Charlotte aged 1 year 2 months also marked as children

Charlotte and James dates are correct so I can only assume it is James but who the other Giles are is a mystery as these dont coenside with what we know to date

1218 Marinda Hyde autobiography, in Tullidge, Women (1877), p. 403

In February of 1818, my father, in company with several families from the same place, emigrated to Hiram, Portage County, Ohio. In the winter of 1831, Ezra Booth, a Methodist minister, procured a copy of the Book of Mormon and brought it to my father's house. They sat up all night reading it, and were very much exercised over it. As soon as they heard that Joseph Smith had arrived in Kirtland, Mr. Booth and wife and my father and mother went immediately to see him. They were convinced and baptized before they returned. They invited the prophet and Elder Rigdon to accompany them home, which they did, and preached several times to crowded congregations, baptizing quite a number.

I was baptized in April following [1831]. The next fall Joseph came with his family to live at my father's house. He was at that time translating the Bible, and Elder Rigdon was acting as scribe. The following spring, a mob, disguising themselves as black men, gathered and burst into his sleeping apartment one night, and dragged him from the bed where he was nursing a sick child. They also went to the house of Elder Rigdon, and took him out with Joseph into an orchard, where, after choking and beating them, they tarred and feathered them, and left them nearly dead. My father, at the first onset, started to the rescue, but was knocked down, and lay senseless for some time. Here I feel like bearing my testimony that during the whole year that Joseph was an inmate of my father's house I never saw aught in his daily life or conversation to make me doubt his divine mission.

In 1833 we moved to Kirtland, and in 1834 I was married to Orson Hyde, and became fully initiated into the cares and duties of a missionary's wife, my husband in common with most of the elders giving his time and energies to the work of the ministry.

In the summer of 1837, leaving me with a three-week old babe, he, in company with Heber C. Kimball and others, went on their first mission to England. Shortly after his return, in the summer of 1838, we, in company with several other families, went to Missouri, where we remained till the next spring. We then went to Nauvoo. In the spring of 1840 Mr. Hyde went on his mission to Palestine; going in the apostolic style, without purse or scrip, preaching his way, and when all other channels were closed, teaching the English language in Europe, till he gained sufficient money to take him to the Holy Land, where he offered up his prayer on the Mount of Olives, and dedicated Jerusalem to the gathering of the Jews in this dispensation. Having accomplished a three-years mission, he returned, and shortly after, in accordance with the revelation on celestial marriage, and with my full consent, Massachusetts rried two more wives. At last we were forced to flee from Nauvoo, and in the spring of 1846, we made our way to Council Bluffs, where our husband left us to go again on mission to England. On his return, in the fall of 1847, he was appointed to take charge of the saints in the States, and to send off the emigration as fast as it arrived in a suitable condition on the frontiers; also to edit a paper in the church interest, the name of which was Frontier Guardian.

In the summer of 1852 we brought our family safely through to Salt Lake City, where we have had peace and safety ever since.

In 1868 I was chosen to preside over the branch of the Female Relief Society of the ward in which I reside, the duties of which position I have prayerfully aempted to perform.
