It is probable that he was an illegitimate son of William son of William son of Nigel, constable of Chester, rather than a son of the elder William; and that he can be identified with the Robert the Constable who married one of the four daughters and coheirs of William Tison, obtaining through her an interest in Holme upon Spalding Moor and other places which had been held by Gilbert Tison in 1086, and who was living as late as 1185.
