  • Notes
    • The Crooke family relationships are complicated. William Crooke was a brother-in-law of a pioneering Tasmanian seler, James Maclanachan (1799-1884) of Ballochmyle, (ADB 5) who married Sarah Reddenbury, the widow of a brother of Elizabeth Raddenbury, William Crooke’s wife. James Maclanachan’s marriage was without issue and Charles and his brothers became in effect James Maclanachan’s adopted children and his beneficiaries. His namesake and Charles’ elder brother James Maclanachan Crooke claimed to be James Maclanachan’s son. Ballochmyle was chosen as the name for James Maclanachans property after a locality in Ayrshire, famous for its association with Robert Burns. Charles spent the first half of his life in Victoria and Tasmania. Both his father who lived at Royal Terracearles may have travelled to England with his mother in 1886-7. He qualified as a land surveyor in Victoria in 1888. In c1898, with his mother and younger brother, Charles moved to Brisbane where from June 1900 until his death he was employed in the Survey Office. On 30th July Charles married Rose Edith Cooper in Brisbane. A few days later in August 1902, Elizabeth Crooke purchased land at 33 Stephens Road on which a house called Ballochmyle was erected. Elizabeth is shown living in Ballochmyle in 1902 (QPOD 1902, 117). Elizabeth Crooke died at the end of October 1902 and the property was transferred to Charles Garibaldi Crooke in December 1902. He was living there when he died in September 1924. He left four children: Francis Warren (1903 - 1974), Louisa Ethel (1904 - ), Tasman Andrew (1909 -) and Augustus Nurday (1913 - 1957). His widow and various children lived at Ballochmyle until the house was sold in 1935. He is buried at South Brisbane Cemetery
